沈從文 (1902 - 1988)

原名沈岳煥,所用過的筆名有小兵、懋琳、炯元、甲辰等。湖南鳳凰縣人。1923年到北京自學並學習寫作。1924年後開始發表作品,並與胡也頻合編《京報副刊》和《民眾文藝》周刊。1928年到上海與胡也頻、丁玲編輯《紅與黑》、《人間》雜誌。翌年任教於中國公學。1930年起,在武漢大學、青島大學任教。1934年起編輯北平和天津的《大公報》副刊《文藝》。抗日戰爭爆發後,到昆明任西南聯合大學教授。抗戰勝利後,任北京大學教授,編輯《大公報》、《益世報》等文學副刊。從1926年出版第一本創作集《鴨子》開始,沈從文先生一生出版了七十餘種作品,被人稱爲多產作家。1988年,86歲的沈從文先生因爲心臟病發逝世。

他擅長寫小說,取材廣泛,網羅了鄉村到城市各色人物的生活,其中以反映湘西下層人民生活的作品最具特色。代表作《邊城》,是一部別具一格的抒情鄉土小說。


Shen Congwen (1902 - 1988)

Originally named Shen Yuehuan; pseudonyms include Xiao Bing, Mao Lin, Jiong Yuan and Jia Chen. Born in Fenghuang, Hunan province. Shen Congwen went to Beijing in 1923 to pursue studies on his own and to learn writing. He started publishing his writings in 1924, and co-edited the supplement to Beijing Morning Post and the weekly Folk Literature with Hu Yepin. In 1928, he went to Shanghai to edit Red and Black and Human World with Hu Yepin and Ding Ling. In the following year, he taught at China College. Starting from 1930, he taught at Wuhan and Qingdao Universities. From 1934 onwards, he edited the literary supplement to L’ impartiale of Beijing and Tianjin. After the outbreak of the War of Resistance against Japan, he went to Kunming to work as a professor at the Southwest Associated University. After the triumph of the War of Resistance, he worked as a professor at Peking University, editing the literary supplements of newspapers including L’impartiale and Yi Shi Bao. Counting from his first collection of works Ducks, Shen published in total 70 volumes of works throughout his life, earning him the reputation as a prolific writer. In 1988, Shen died of a heart attack at the age of 86.

Shen was well-versed in the art of fiction writing. He took his materials from a wide variety of sources, extracting bits and pieces from the lives of different walks of people – from the villages to the cities. Particularly unique are the works depicting the lives of the grassroots population in Xiangxi. His representative work, The Border Town, is a highly stylized piece of emotive “native earth” fiction.
