朱光潛 (1897 - 1986)

安徽桐城人。筆名孟實。小時已熟讀四書五經,《古文觀止》及《唐詩三百首》。1922年,在香港大學畢業。1925年赴英法留學,獲博士學位。1933年回國,先後擔任過四川大學文學院院長、武漢大學教務長、北京大學文學院代理院長等職。曾主編《文學雜誌》。1949年後,擔任北大教授、中國美學學會會長、中國外文文學會常務理事、中科院社會科學部委員和民盟中央委員等職。

朱光潛宣揚美學,貢獻極大,他翻譯這方面的許多重要典籍,如克羅齊的《美學原理》、柏拉圖的《文藝對話集》、萊辛的《拉奧孔》、愛克曼輯的《歌德談話錄》、黑格爾的《美學三卷》及維柯的《新科學》等。自著則有《悲劇心理學》、《文藝心理學》、《西方美學史》等。


Zhu Guangqian (1897 - 1986)

Born in Tongcheng, Anhui province; with Meng Shi as pseudonym. As a child, Zhu Guangqian was already conversant in Chinese classics including The Four Books and The Five Classics, The Gems of Chinese literature, and Three Hundred Poems of The Tang Dynasty. In 1922, he graduated from The University of Hong Kong. In 1925, he went to pursue his studies in the United Kingdom and France, and obtained his doctorate degree. In 1933, he returned to China, working in a succession of capacities, including the dean of School of Arts of Sichuan University, academic registrar of Wuhan University, and acting dean of School of Arts of Peking University. He also once worked as the editor-in-chief of Literature Magazine. After 1949 he took up posts including professor at Peking University, the Chairman of China Aesthetics Society, executive director of the China Society of Foreign Literature, academician of the Chinese Academy of Social Science, and member of the central committee of the China Democratic League.

Zhu made important contributions to the promotion of aesthetics. He translated a significant number of major literature in this respect, including Croce’s Guide to Aesthetics, Plato’s Dialogues on Art and Literature, Lessing’s Laocoon, Eckermann’s Conversation with Goethe, Hegel’s three-volume Aesthetics: Lectures on Fine Art, and Vico’s The New Science. His own works include The Psychology of Tragedy, The Psychology of Literature, and A History of Western Aesthetics.
