Chen Yinke (1890 - 1969)

Ancestral home in Yiling, Jiangxi province; born in Changsha. Early in his childhood, Chen Yinke began studying the Western academic canon. From 1910 onwards, he studied in a succession of academies in Europe, the United States and Japan, spanning over a period of more than a decade. He later assumed teaching posts in prestigious institutions including Tsinghua University and the Southwest Associated University. In 1940, he accepted a professorship offered by Oxford University but was stranded in Hong Kong by war, so he worked as visiting professor in the University of Hong Kong instead. Later, with his eye trouble worsening and Oxford University repeating its previous offer, Chen went to England in 1945, using the chance to seek out prominent surgeons for an operation on his eyes. Unfortunately the surgery did not succeed, and he resigned from his professorship and returned to China. In 1948, he took up the post as professor in the Department of History at Lingnan University. In 1952, he transferred to Zhongshan University and worked as professor until his death on October 7, 1969.

Chen Yinke dedicated his whole life to teaching and academic research. He conducted extensive research on the history of the Wei, Jin, Northern and Southern Dynasties, the history of Sui and Tang Dynasties, the history of religion (of Buddhism in particular), the history of different tribes in the Western Regions, the history of Mongolia, ancient linguistics, Dunhuang studies, classical Chinese literature, and the methodology of historiography. He offered brilliant readings on all of these domains of study and published nearly a hundred articles. These prove to be of great contribution to the academia. The articles were later edited and collected into Han Liu Tang Collection and Jin Ming Guan Collection. Monographs include, inter alia, A Treatise on the Origins of the Institutions of Sui and Tang Dynasties, A Treatise on the Political History of Tang Dynasty, A Monograph on the Poetry of Yuan Bai, and An Anecdotal Biography of Liu Rushi.
