Zhang Ailing (1920 - 1995)

Originally named Zhang Ying. Ancestral home in Fengrun, Hebei province; born in Shanghai. Zhang Ailing was active in Shanghai and Hong Kong around the time of the Second World War. Her maiden work, Legend, won critical acclaims from the literary circle shortly after its publication. As early as the 50s, Zhang already completed most of her currently existing works, including Love in a Fallen City, The Golden Cangue, and Eighteen Springs. Love in a Fallen City is Zhang's representative work.

Zhang's works frequently feature Hong Kong, Shanghai and Nanjing as their background. Her unique interpretation of human character and outstanding skills of atmosphere creation are unparalleled. In 1961, Professor Hsia Chih Tsing devoted a whole chapter to the discussion of Zhang's works in his published book A History of Modern Chinese Fiction, liking her to the great writers of the 20th century such as Lu Xun and Mao Dun. This not only serves as an affirmation of Zhang's talents but also lays down the cornerstone for the research work on what is called "Zhang's studies". In September 1995, Zhang passed away, unexpected, in her apartment in Los Angeles at the age of 75.
